Garment workers place 5-point demands

Bangladesh Garments Workers Unity Council, an umbrella body of 17 garments workers federation, yesterday submitted a memorandum to Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) containing their of demands.
The five-point demand includs enhancement of the workers' minimum monthly salary at 5,000 Taka, scrapping the labour (Amendment) act-2009 and stopping plan of forming industrial police, pre-fixation of rates of production, to ensure the workers' freedom to be united through trade union as per 87 section of the ILO convention.
A delegation of the council submitted the memorandum at BKMEA office in the city after police had halted their protest procession towards BKMEA office from the National Press Club.
Earlier, the Council organised a rally in front of the National Press Club at about 12pm. Workers leaders Amirul Haque Amin, Towhidur Rahman, Salauddin Swapan, Selim Reza, Nazma Akter, Rokeya Sultana Arzu, Md. Rafique, Kazi Mohammad Ali, Shafia Parvin and Tahmina Das, among others, addressed the rally.
